On the road again with a new manager at the helm

For the sixth time in five years the Mayo senior ladies will set out on the road towards league and championship action with a new manager at the helm. Following in the footsteps of Michael Ryder, Frank Browne, and Charlie Lambert in the last few years is Tuam native Kevin Reidy. Even with the upheaval in management over the last two years the Mayo players have managed to pull through and claim two Connacht titles, a national league title, and make it to an All Ireland final. So Reidy knows that he has the talent at his disposal to make a serious challenge for honours this year.

Mayo fail to shine on opening day

For the second in row Mayo started off the National League with a defeat at the hands of Derry, this time in James Stephen’s Park last Sunday. While both sides hit 10 scores the decisive score of the game came from Derry debutant James Kielt 45 minutes into the contest, who got on the end of move that came about as Tom Cunniffe lost possession trying to break out of defence.

Louis looks for historic win

While the glamour tie of Sunday afternoon will be the all Mayo clash in the Connacht Colleges A final, the B final which throws in at 1.30pm will have plenty of Mayo interest also with St Louis, Kiltimagh, attempting to keep the Mayo stranglehold on the title. The east Mayo school took down the defending champions Rice College, Westport, in the semi-final last week by 0-12 to 0-9 in Ballinrobe and now find themselves in the final on Sunday. Standing in their way is Galway outfit ST Paul’s, Oughterard, who have surprised many this year seeing off what would be considered more vaunted opponents in the shape of St Attracta’s, Tubbercurry, St Nathy’s, Ballaghaderreen, and Summerhill Sligo en route to the final. The St Louis side are managed by former Mayo star Maurice Sheridan and former Ballintubber player Tony Duffy, the duo have guided them to wins over Ballyhaunis Community School, Carrick-on-Shannon, and last week Rice College, and will be hoping to ensure a clean sweep for Mayo on Sunday.

Ladies looking for league success

While the men only secured their division one status last weekend, the Mayo ladies’ team had a league quarter final under their belt already and were deep in preparations for this weekend’s semi-final. Laois will make the trip to Aghamore on Sunday afternoon at 3pm to try and stop Mayo making their way into their second national league final in three years. Wins over Donegal, Kerry and Armagh along with a draw against this weekend’s opponents Laois in the group stage, set up a taxing quarter final encounter away to Clare a fortnight ago which has put Kevin Reidy’s side into the semi-final.

Reidy ready for league final

A couple of months into his reign as manager of the Mayo ladies’ senior side, Tuam native Kevin Reidy is looking forward to his side’s National League division one final against Cork on Saturday May 9. “I’m looking forward to the final, it was a very tough game last Sunday against a very physical Laois side.” Reidy’s ladies’ side came out on the right side of a 3-10 to 0-13 win in Aghamore thanks in no small part to a player of the game display from Kilmaine sharp shooter Emma Mullin. She hit 3-4 for Mayo from play, while Cora Staunton landed five points on the day, four of them coming from frees as she was shackled by the Laois defence.

We are testing ourselves against the best - Reidy

It has been a quick few months for Kevin Reidy since he took charge of his first training session with the Mayo ladies’ team at the turn of the year. The Tuam native has seen in that time his side just get enough players together for the league opener against Tyrone where they lost by two points, pick up the pace, and made it back to the national league final after a gap of the year. Since that opening day defeat the Mayo panel has expanded with some old faces coming back and some new ones stepping up to the mark when it mattered.

Reidy looks to the future after league final

After watching his side ship a heavy defeat in the league final, the last thing Mayo manager Kevin Reidy would have had to want to do was to pick over the bones of the game to the waiting press pack. But with the Cork celebrations going on in the background, the Tuam native was open and honest with his assessment of the sixty minutes of football that had transpired. “I'm very disappointed with our performance today more than anything else. We never really got out of the blocks at all. We're along way off Cork at the minute, but I still think that even with the score-line today we didn't do ourselves justice. We had a couple of goal chances and we didn't preform. Cork are a fine team not taking anything away from them at all, but we didn't preform. There still up there to be knocked, but were going to have to go away and lick our wounds and come back.”

Reidy expects a tough test on Sunday

Mayo ladies manager Kevin Reidy is expecting a much tougher test for his ladies senior side this Sunday in the Connacht final against Galway than they got in their semi-final. Mayo’s 26 point drubbing of Leitrim wasn’t the ideal preparation for the premier game in Connacht, but everything is moving along nicely on the training field ahead of Sunday’s game in Fr O’Hara Park in Charlestown at 4pm according to the Galway native.
